The open sides let you feel the warmth and makes your fire easier to burn. The domed mesh top offers a nice safety feature by being able to cover an open fire. There is also a poker to adjust your coals or wood. The bottom is slightly raised in a couple places to put your wood on to get air flow under it. It would be nice, but there are no holes in the bottom to remove the accumulated ashes. I waited until the fire pit was completely cooled off, then picked it up (very lightweight) and tipped it over to empty the ashes/charcoal. This even comes with a cover. Good deal for $99 bucks!
